The simple muscular exertions involved in producing the familiar ha, ha, ha, he said, trigger an increase in endorphins, the brain chemicals known for their feel-good effect.

His results build on a long history of scientific attempts to understand a deceptively simple and universal behavior. “Laughter is very weird stuff, actually,” Dr. Dunbar said. “That’s why we got interested in it.” And the findings fit well with a growing sense that laughter contributes to group bonding and may have been important in the evolution of highly social humans.

Social laughter, Dr. Dunbar suggests, relaxed and contagious, is “grooming at a distance,” an activity that fosters closeness in a group the way one-on-one grooming, patting and delousing promote and maintain bonds between individual primates of all sorts.

In five sets of studies in the laboratory and one field study at comedy performances, Dr. Dunbar and colleagues tested resistance to pain both before and after bouts of social laughter. The pain came from a freezing wine sleeve slipped over a forearm, an ever tightening blood pressure cuff or an excruciating ski exercise.

The findings, published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences, eliminated the possibility that the pain resistance measured was the result of a general sense of well being rather than actual laughter. And, Dr. Dunbar said, they also provided a partial answer to the ageless conundrum of whether we laugh because we feel giddy or feel giddy because we laugh.

“The causal sequence is laughter triggers endorphin activation,” he said. What triggers laughter is a question that leads into a different labyrinth.

Robert R. Provine, a neuroscientist at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and the author of “Laughter: A Scientific Investigation,” said he thought the study was “a significant contribution” to a field of study that dates back 2,000 years or so.

It has not always focused on the benefits of laughter. Both Plato and Aristotle, Dr. Provine said, were concerned with the power of laughter to undermine authority. And he noted that the ancients were very aware that laughter could accompany raping and pillaging as well as a comic tale told by the hearth.

Dr. Dunbar, however, was concerned with relaxed, contagious social laughter, not the tyrant’s cackle or the “polite titter” of awkward conversation. He said a classic example would be the dinner at which everyone else speaks a different language and someone makes an apparently hilarious but incomprehensible comment. “Everybody falls about laughing, and you look a little puzzled for about three seconds, but really you just can’t help falling about laughing yourself.”

To test the relationship of laughter of this sort to pain resistance, Dr. Dunbar did a series of six experiments. In five, participants watched excerpts of comedy videos, neutral videos or videos meant to promote good feeling but not laughter.

Among the comedy videos were excerpts from “The Simpsons,” “Friends” and “South Park,” as well as from performances by standup comedians like Eddie Izzard. The neutral videos included “Barking Mad,” a documentary on pet training, and a golfing program. The positive but unfunny videos included excerpts from shows about nature, like the “Jungles” episode of “Planet Earth.”

In the lab experiments, the participants were tested before and after seeing different combinations of videos. They suffered the frozen wine sleeve or the blood pressure cuff in different experiments and were asked to say when the pain reached a point they could not stand. They wore recorders during the videos so that the time they spent laughing could be established. In the one real-world experiment, similar tests were conducted at performances of an improvisational comedy group, the Oxford Imps.

The results, when analyzed, showed that laughing increased pain resistance, whereas simple good feeling in a group setting did not. Pain resistance is used as an indicator of endorphin levels because their presence in the brain is difficult to test; the molecules would not appear in blood samples because they are among the brain chemicals that are prevented from entering circulating blood by the so-called blood brain barrier.

Dr. Dunbar thinks laughter may have been favored by evolution because it helped bring human groups together, the way other activities like dancing and singing do. Those activities also produce endorphins, he said, and physical activity is important in them as well. “Laughter is an early mechanism to bond social groups,” he said. “Primates use it.”

Indeed, apes are known to laugh, although in a different way than humans. They pant. “Panting is the sound of rough-and-tumble play,” Dr. Provine said. It becomes a “ritualization” of the sound of play. It allows me to thoroughly enjoy the winding road to my office. Tonight traveling that road home was especially wonderful. Cool enough to have the windows down and allow the breeze to fluff through my hair. The big full moon caused the lace of clouds to glow against the dark blue sky. On one curve there is always a pleasant fragrance. I am not sure what is growing there, but I like to breathe deeply on that corner. Then as if all this had just been a prelude to the real show, lightening began to flash. The air caressing me now chilly, I became aware of the chorus of crickets and frogs. The little red fox met me at the beginning of my drive, bouncing off as if to say…”she’s home, she’s home, she’s home.” The rabbit, who hangs out in my front meadow, did the same. I realized something on my drive home. “Taking time to smell the roses” sometimes has nothing to do with flowers. by Yvonne Sinclair

Jump into "the box"!!

Often we are advised to think "out of the box," function "out of the box," or work "out of the box." Energy that is visible to our naked eye and that which is not.

Western culture likes to define our world by things that are inanimate (or non living) and animate (living), systematically giving greater importance to things which fall into the category of the animate.

Feng Shui, however, acknowledges that energy or " Chi" is the living in all things because of the innate energy that every object produces.

Be aware of this innate energy as you take in your surroundings – home, office, garden. The average person has 27 items in their space that does not serve them! These items can produce negative though patterns on a subconscious level, and slowly de-motivate you.

Release the Negative!!

Take some time this weekend and evaluate the things you surround yourself with and ask yourself if you take positive energy from them. If you have things in your life that are not necessary or practical, and they do not add positive energy, consider removing them from your environment for a while. Start with 27 items. and see how you feel. Be sure to box them up and put them away in a closet or the garage. After 7 days, open the box, review the contents, and make some decisions about them.

Things that do not serve a positive purpose in our lives only weigh us down and can even act as a barrier for positive chi and new possibilities. Upon completion of this task you will find your life has shifted, and new opportunities have started to present themselves.

the Art of Life • 4790 irvine blvd Suite 105-496 • irvine, CA 92620
http://www.janetwoods.com

Depression and Suppliments. But the FDA does not regulate supplements for safety or effectiveness. "Natural" or not, supplements can lead to overmedication, drug interactions and serious side effects. Always talk to your doctor if you are even thinking about combining a dietary supplement with your conventional medical treatment.

Discuss the following supplements with your doctor to decide which ones might be right for you:
• 5-HTP (a derivative of the amino acid tryptophan) is converted into the neurotransmitter serotonin, which helps regulate mood, sleep and appetite.
• Fish oil supplements, which are high in (an herb) may improve mood, and decrease the anxiety, physical symptoms, and insomnia related to mild to severe depression. But it's less effective than conventional antidepressants and may cause drug interactions.
When it comes to treating depression, avoid the following supplements, which lack research about their safety and effectiveness: Acetyl-L-Carnitine, Chromium, DHA, DHEA, Inositol, Kava, Lavender, L-Tryptophan, Melatonin, Phenylalanine, Phosphatidylserine, and Tyrosine.

There's nothing wrong with looking for alternatives to treating depression. While many people are opposed to prescription medications, possibly fearing adverse side effects, it's important to remember that prescription drugs are tightly regulated, tested, and evaluated and approved for use by the FDA. No supplements are tested as thoroughly as medications are. Using supplements, vitamins, and herbs involves risks as well. Always discuss supplementation with your health care provider before making a decision on your own.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://feelgoodplace4u.blogspot.com/2011/06/depression-and-suppliments-feel-good.html' title='Depression and Suppliments. I used to make my own Béarnaise sauce with fresh herbs, fresh eggs, and butter. Now I use Knorr Béarnaise sauce mix. My taste has changed and the “made from scratch” sauce seems extremely rich. The Knorr mix can be made with soy or almond milk. It has Wheat Starch and Whey protein, so if you are on a strict no wheat no dairy this will not work for you. If your diet allows this will be close to wheat/gluten free and dairy free.

Really easy to make. I use a poaching pan for the eggs and make the sauce in a heavy sauce pan while the spinach and artichoke bottoms finish.

Cut the artichoke bottoms in fourths so they will lay a little more flat and cover them with sautéed spinach. Top this with the poached eggs and then a long slice of sauce. Serve with additional sauce available.

A little fruit on the side makes this a really wonderful wakeup meal.

Dating can feel good, sometimes. Little fun article about dating today vs. dating in the "good ole" days.

Gramma does Dating… or Maybe NOT.

By Yvonne Sinclair M.A., a.k.a. Nana

In this age, there are a higher percentage of the population who call themselves (or someone else calls them) seniors. In this age group, dating can open a new and frightening endeavor.
Dating in the 50’s and 60’s was much different than dating today. In those days, you found a person at a party, church, class, or group who looked appealing. You said to yourself, “Self, that is a person I may want to get to know.” So, you found a way to mosey over and introduce yourself, had your best friend help with the introduction process, or made eye contact across the room and did your best flirting move.

We had all kinds of ideas about how to open the door to love and relationships. Magazines published a plethora of information on how to meet the perfect someone, get him/her to notice you, and live happily ever after. After you met the person (literally in person), you then began the activity of getting to know what this person was all about. Dating meant the guy showed up for the gal and took her out. This meant he paid for the outing, and she looked as good as possible on his arm. Getting to know someone involved learning the following: what songs you like, what foods you eat, what interests you in a way of life work, which church you attend, how do you smell, how do you talk, how you look me in the eye or not, how you dress, your treatment of others, and most of all, if you like me.

Today we get to know the person on paper. By “paper,” I mean the internet: Match.com, Yahoo.com, Friendfinder.com, EHarmony.com, and on and on and on. Those of us who dated in the 50’s and 60’s can be a little overwhelmed with this new way of getting to know someone. First, you will need to know enough, or know someone who does, about a computer so you can put up a profile. You will need to decide just what you want (or do not want) to reveal about yourself. You must remember: of course the people you will be meeting will also decide what not to include. You find a nice picture, describe your loved activities, and list your attributes as a date. Then, the fun begins.

So, this Gramma decided to do just that. This is her story.

It was exciting to see all the men in my age group. Whoopee! This was much better than searching through months of parties, meetings, classes, etc. I could just click and date. I began to get responses and messages. They loved my picture, shared similar interests, or they shared something fabulous about themselves. I had men from all the way on the other side of the country telling me I was wonderful. Even one man from the other side of the world admired my physical self. Wow, what a heady experience this was beginning to be. As a Gramma, I liked this admiration.

After the first couple of emails, the sexual innuendos or overt remarks began. Sometimes it happened on the second or even first email. Hmmmm, do I take this as a compliment? At my age, a sexually interested male is a good thing. I was a little confused. If I responded to these statements, at all, they became more overtly sexual. The man on the other side of the world wanted “other” pictures, and he was interested in women with large breasts. I had to block him to stop his “interests.” When I questioned the ones on the other side of the USA, the same theme began to show up. Okay, I can weed these out, right?

Gramma chose one to meet for lunch. He seemed like a nice man. He sounded responsible, family oriented, educated, caring, sensitive, and interesting. So, I drove to the restaurant. I did not want to be picked up. As I parked and walked in, I noticed a man walking in also. Oops, I could have turned around and left. If this had been the 50’s, I would not have chosen to flirt with him. No, I was not afraid or nervous. I was seeing this man in person for the first time. If I had seen him in person upon our first meeting like we would have in the 50’s, he would not have been someone I told myself to get to know. I was polite and still attended lunch with him. Then I had to decide how to tell him “NOT INTERESTED!” Gramma did not like this part of the contemporary dating scene.

I was forced back to the “drawing board” called internet dating. On my email, I found a new contact with a young man. Yes, I said “young” man. He was about the age of my children. I politely responded and chatted. He wanted to meet. I asked the big question: “Why does a much younger man want to meet a Gramma?” Are you ready? He said he had an affair with his best friend’s mother when he was in high school, and she was a red head. He has been interested in older red-haired women ever since. Oh yea, movin’ on.

It continued…
-Over coffee, one man told me about throwing out all of his ex-wife’s canning jars without her knowing. Now I like to can things and could not imagine anyone being this cold. This was one thing he had decided to leave out of his profile information. It was a deal breaker for me.
-The next man wrote wonderful poetry to me, and I really wanted to meet him. We agreed to have lunch together. Over lunch, he told me about the stepchildren he still had in his life. They either lived with him, or he supported them. One was a drug addict, one was a felon, and the other just liked to ask for things. I didn’t need any people like that in my life, so I moved on.
-There were some men who communicated from work and did not seem to want to meet evenings or weekends, just during the workday. “MARRIED” was the big red sign that came up on those guys.
-I met one man for lunch on a workday, and we sat by the river for a while in the afternoon. My email was on his computer, and his “girlfriend” (of several years) contacted me with questions. He had not mentioned he was in a relationship and lived with her. Yep, movin’ on…
-Oh, I almost forgot about the man I met in a small town near me for dinner. It was cold, and when he walked me to my car and tried to convince me to meet again, his nose ran and dripped off his beard. I swear, this is the truth.
-Finally, there is one I am not too proud of. There was a nice looking picture of him in his profile. He was standing behind a kitchen bar, and he was resting his hands on top (the bar hid most of his body). I arranged to meet him for lunch in the same small town. I arrived early and walked around town until the lunch date time arrived. I noticed a man walking around, too. He did not represent his picture at all and I finally realized who he was. When I realized he was my lunch date, I quietly stole away in my little red chariot. Yep, “click of the mouse.” I am not proud of that one.

I joined a new dating service. This service included going to an interview, providing a list with “have to haves” and “don’t wants,” and being sent on lunch dates. I asked for someone with style, among other things. My first lunch date appeared to be in his 80’s. This would not have been a bad thing, except this was way out of the age range I had requested. The deal breaker was that his “style” was from the 70’s, and we were in the 2000’s. I am sure he had not shopped for new duds since the 70’s. So much for someone weeding out the pack for me…

Gramma eventually found a special relationship match. He was a little different because he only wore short pants and shaved his head except for a que (you know, the little tail thing at the back that is supposed to be used to yank you into heaven). I could overlook these minor flaws. They weren’t deal breakers. He cooked, had his own home, was involved and respected in the community, had an admirable employment history, and remained involved in his family. Long story short: he did not like my questions about his sudden lack of communication after nine months into our relationship. He broke up with me over the internet. The action seemed to be a little appropriate since we met over the internet, but the mouse-clicking felt quite rude.

Not to be daunted, this Gramma jumped right back into the choosing and loosing. Yep, the next one was not quite as different, had a history not quite as favorable, but he still remained involved with family. After many months of spending weekends together and talking about “moving in,” I came home to find most of his “things” (the things that meant something to him) gone. I call him “Disappearing Don.” Disappearing Don did reappear a year later at Christmas time, and he asked for a visit. He explained he felt he had made a mistake when he left. When I did not accept his offer, I was greeted the next morning with an email picture showing a part of his anatomy not fit for the internet.

Don’t get me wrong, the man was not always the “breaker upper.” This Gramma did some amount of rejecting the guys. It is just too easy in this internet dating era to click the mouse and be done, to not respond to email and be saved the job of saying “no,” or to block an email address instead of sucking it up and facing him/her. After becoming an “experienced” internet dater, I adopted a modus operands. In the beginning of the “relationship,” I would ask for an agreement that if either one of us wanted out, we would talk in person. Some agreed to the arrangement and some ran. Sometimes it worked, and sometimes it did not. It was my way of putting a little 50’s back into the internet dating process.

In the old days, we had to face the person. We had to, at least, have a tone of voice as to why this was not working. He/she had the opportunity to ask why. Of course the old, “It’s not you, it’s me” was our way of clicking the mouse, but there was not blocking email addresses or just not responding. Usually there were enough mutual acquaintances to report to each of you about the other. Closure was possible. Clicking the mouse leaves whole lot of empty air space with a whole lot of unanswered questions. Questions may include: what was it that was not acceptable about me? Was it timing? Was it something I said, something I wore, or something I did or did not do?

The whole reason for this Gramma’s story is to let the older generation know that dating has definitely changed. If you are thinking of leaving your spouse for the great dating scene, think again. I also want to inform the younger generation and those who rely on internet to meet, communicate, and/or woo (now there is an old dating word) the love of his/her life, that things can be different. I want to tell all, don’t click the mouse, please. Don’t just disappear. Have the moxy to face the person and talk about the reason it does not work for you. Give the other person the respect of caring enough to communicate. You will respect yourself for taking the time and effort to allow the other person closure.
And this Gramma lives happily ever after… I know, this is not a definitive end of story. What is more important than my end of the story is your end of story. Be careful. What is this “muchness?” Do I have “muchness” or is my “muchness” missing, too? Was I ever “muchier?” “Muchness” seemed to be a good thing to possess. I wanted this “muchness,” whatever it was.

I considered that “muchness” could be that inner strength of self. It could also be strength that comes from inside. Was it the power to stand up for ones self? Was “muchness” even more than that? The dictionary defines “muchness” as, “Greatness of quantity, degree, or extent.” Hmm, quantity of what, degree of where, how much extent? No matter how long I contemplated the possibilities, I was still in the dark. I began to explore and contemplate “muchness” even further.

A source of information suggests that the phrase “muchness” was coined by Shakespeare. According to the website source phrases.org.uk/meanings, “Origin; Shakespeare coined the words ‘countless,’ silliness,’ ‘tardiness,’ and many others of the same form. ‘Muchness’ sounds typical of the Bard’s work, and it seems a fair bet that it was one of his inventions. In fact, the word was in use by the 14th century, predating Shakespeare by more than a century. Also, the Shakesperian-sounding phrase ‘much of a muchness’ first appeared considerably later, in the play The Provok’d Husband, 1728, which was a collaboration between John Vanbrugh and Colley Cibber: Man: I hope.., you and your good Woman agree still. J. Moody: Ay! ay! much of a Muchness. Muchness means physical magnitude or largeness and is derived from the earlier word mickleness. “ “Much of a muchness” has remained as part of the language since Vanbrugh’s day, but has never been commonplace. It is rather an odd phrase on the face of it as, in literal terms, it just means “of a similar quality of being much.” Lewis Carroll picked up on that oddness in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, when he had the Dormouse ask Alice, “That begins with an M, such as, muchness – you know you say things are ‘much of a muchness’ – did you ever see, a drawing of a muchness?”

Even after extensive historical analysis, we are still not really sure where the phrase “muchness” originated. Is “muchness” that ability to be joyful at our fingertips? In The Invitation, Oriah Mountain Dreamer put it this way: “I want to know if you can be with Joy, mine or your own, if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, to be realistic, to remember the limitations of being human.”

If that ability to experience joy is “muchness,” then I wanted some. I wanted to know how to get to the place where I would dance with wildness and let ecstasy fill me to my fingertips. After all, that sounds wonderful and very “muchy.” However, I found it was not an easy task to feel that good. If the Law of Attraction is correct, and I felt that good, I would attract nothing but wonderful into my life.

“Muchness” continuously sounds increasingly desirable. Let’s get some “muchness.” I believe we start with accepting ourselves, all of ourself, as wonderful. Now, hang in here with me. I know this sounds impossible to achieve, but that is where we start. We must put aside all the old messages and old “tapes” in our head. We must silence the old voices telling us we are dumb, we will never amount to anything, we are ugly, or whatever negative message we were given. In our heart, we know these messages are not true.

Negative messages can form what we call a core belief. A core belief is something we believe is true because certain messages were instilled in us as children. If you have a negative core belief, then you may be doing what the Native Americans call the “dark dance.” You may be going through life validating an untrue core belief. For instance, if you were told you were dumb, you may notice every dumb thing you do and discount all the smart actions you take. If you were told you would never amount to anything, and you would never be successful, then you may sabotage any “success” you achieve. If you are about to graduate from college, you might just drop out because that inner voice says you can’t be successful. If you own a business and it becomes successful, you may sabotage that success because of your core belief that you will never amount to anything.

Stopping the “dark dance” is not easy. It takes focused attention to the positive aspects, and day by day, those old, untrue, and negative messages will eventually erode away. Overtly and consciously noticing the smart things or all the little successes through the day will eventually change your core belief to a true one.

When we begin to accept ourselves as wonderful beings, then we can go to the inner self and plant our “muchness.” Having “muchness” means possessing the ability to find the place in your existence where you are calm and centered. It is a place of joy and strength within yourself. Maybe it is stopping the frantic activity and allowing the “now” to embrace you. Sometimes we occupy ourselves in order to avoid doing what we really need to do for ourselves. Maybe we were told taking care of ourself is “selfish.” I am suggesting that you may be the only person who is fully equipped to take care of your inner self. Perhaps you should be “selfish” and take care of you. Now if you have a cookie, and the person next to you is drooling over your cookie, not sharing would be selfish. Taking care of yourself is important for anyone to thrive. So be selfish in a way that will help you actualize a healthy, happy, and fulfilled life. When you feel good, you can then be there for others. Sometimes when we act “unselfish” all the time and take care of others instead of ourselves, we end up empty and therefore unavailable to care for anyone.

I found some ideas for reclaiming your “muchness” on the website positivelypresent.com:

“6 Questions To Help You Reclaim Your “Muchness”:

1.What did I like to do when I was younger?

When you think about what you liked to do as a kid, you may be surprised that you still like to do those same things. Often times the things we like as kids are the things we like our whole lives (I certainly know that’s true for me when it comes to reading and writing!). Give some thought to this, and you’ll ultimately unveil the essence of who you are. What you liked to do then says a lot about the kind of person you were.

2.Why did I stop doing or continue to do those things?

Some people continue to do the things they loved when they were kids. Some people even make careers out of those things (as I someday hope to do). But often times, people stop doing the things they loved to do when they were kids. Think about what you did as a kid and whether or not you still do it and why.

3.Who did I think I would be when I grew up?

When you think about who you thought you would be, you’ll learn about the things that were important to you as a kid. Of course, in some cases, you can’t incorporate these things into your adult life all that easily. But, for example, if you wanted to be a professional basketball player, think about why you wanted to be that person. What did you think that grown-up would have?

4.How am I like that fictional version of myself?

When you think back on that childhood ideal of who you were going to be, also take some time to consider how you might actually be like that person. You might not be exactly what you thought you would be, but you may be closer than you think. For example, I always thought I’d be a famous journalist of some sort (which I’m clearly not), but I do spend most of my time writing, so I’m really not that far off.

5.What attitudes and beliefs did I hold as a kid?

This is the most important question. Although it’s essential to examine what you liked to do and who you thought you would be, the most important thing to consider is what your beliefs were as a child. What ideals were important to you? In Alice, the Mad Hatter thinks Alice has lost some of her bravery and gumption because she grew older. Consider how you may have acted as a child and then ponder…

6.How have my attitudes and beliefs changed?

As we grow and learn, it’s no surprise that some of our values will change. We understand that the world is a complex place, and everything cannot possibly fall neatly into a “good” or “bad” category. Think about how your beliefs may have changed since you were a kid. What attitudes did you have then that you may not have now? I know personally that I believed a lot more in my adult-self back then than I do now, and that’s something I certainly want to get back to.”

It seems “muchness” would also be having the strength to say “no” when necessary. We must also reconize that the ability to say “yes” to anything good for us would be part of our “muchness.” It is important to keep strong personal boundaries that allow for healthy relationships. “Muchness” is the ability to voice our opinions in an assertive way. “Muchness” would mean asking for our needs and wishes. “Muchness” includes the ability to stand up to anyone harming another.

So far, “muchness” appears to be a tall order. Getting to the complete “muchness” place is not an immediate happening. I decided to plant some “muchness seeds” inside and allow them to grow. First, I had to focus on taking care of myself. Hmmm, how to do that. I began by eating right for me, exercising to take care of my body, and just living in a healthy manner. That was a good start. To help the seeds grow, I added a massage now and then, a wonderful long bubble bath with candles and music, laying on the grass while watching the clouds roll by, and maybe just spending time petting the cat. Everyone may not like this kind of “muchness” nurturing. You may need something entirely different to allow your “muchness seeds” to develop. Honor yourself and your personal needs. Allow your “muchness” to get huge and wonderful.

Now we must tackle the strength thing. Saying “no” is not so hard, right? Well, maybe a little hard sometimes. There is always the person who likes to add a little guilt trip to get you to say “yes” when he or she wants something. Understanding what is your “stuff” and what is not your “stuff” is the key. Think of everyone having their own basket of “stuff.” If your friend calls and wants you to sit with his or her dog while he or she is on a cruise, and you had plans to go away for a day also, they may throw his or her “stuff” in your basket. They may say, “But you can give up your day just now so I can go on the cruise. The cruise is much more important that your one day.” If you allow them put stuff in your basket, you will say things like, “But I, oh well, I would have liked…” etc. defending and explaining. To keep others’ stuff out of your basket, you can practice what is called reflective listening. It goes like this: “I know that is what you think, I know that is how you feel, or I know thta is what you want.“ Shift the “stuff” right back into their basket. This would mean you have healthy boundaries. You actually say “no” and take care of yourself by keeping your special day. This takes practice. I see the “muchness seeds” beginning to grow already.

I began walking around the house looking in all the mirrors and practicing “no.” “NO,” “NO,” “NOPE,” “NOT!” It finally started to feel natural. When the UPS man appeared at the door, and I answered it with a “NO,” I realized I should monitor my no’s. He seemed to leave in a bit of a hurry. Sorry UPS man, I was just growing my “muchness.”

Speaking of mirrors, has anyone ever given you instructions to look into a mirror and tell yourself, “I love you!” Oh my, isn’t that hard?! I needed to grow a lot more “muchness” to comfortably pull that one off. So, I nurtured my muchness with tai chi, granting myself introvert-alone time, getting together with friends I had not seen in a while, smiling at everyone I met, and sending a happy email to all my email addresses. That was a great addition to my “muchness.” And again, your “muchness” growing may look extremely different than mine. You are your own individual with your own special needs and abilities. Making a list of activities and things that feel good to you will give you an idea of how to grow your “muchness” in the most effective way.

I am not at the “dancing until joy fills my fingertips” place yet, but I am working towards that goal. I am beginning to whiffle through my tulgey wood just a little easier. Sometimes my tulgey wood gets a little tangly, and the whiffling is harder, but I keep trudging through on my path.

If your tulgey wood is a day of fun and enjoyment, whiffling will be easy. If your tulgey wood is taking a dreaded exam or confronting someone, your whiffling will probably be harder, but you can do it.

I have to go now. My “muchness” needs some attention. Maybe yours does, too…

Have a “frabjous” day and happy whiffling.

©Copyright 2010 by Yvonne Sinclair M.A., MFCC. We spend our time keeping busy with work, friends, socializing, cleaning, daily tasks, shopping--anything to avoid having to face or feel our emotions that we are carrying around from past painful experiences or traumas. The problem with this, according to mind/body medical experts, is that repressed feelings don't just go away. They actually remain in the body, taking up our energy and laying the groundwork for physical ailments, illnesses and disease.

"Many illnesses are quite simply the end result of emotions that have been stuffed, unacknowledged, and unexperienced for years," says Christiane Northrup, specialist in women's health and author of Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom. "Unexpressed emotions tend to 'stay' in the body like small ticking time bombs," she says. "They are illnesses in incubation."

According to experts in mind/body medicine, our emotions have a profound effect on us because they are physically linked to our bodies via our immune, endocrine, and central nervous systems. These experts agree that often the seeds for a patient's physical problems were planted by the patient's earlier emotional traumas.

According to Northrup, millions of women suffer from chronic pelvic pain, vaginitis, ovarian cysts, genital warts, endometriosis, and cervical dysplasia, which are conditions that are the language through which women's bodies speak to them.

Edward T. Creagan, MD, an oncologist at the Mayo Clinic, says that in dealing with the emotions of grief, if you don't face your grief, your wounds may never go away. "Unresolved grief can surface years later as headaches, relationship issues, intestinal problems, mental health difficulties, eating disorders, chemical dependency or other issues," he

Additionally, holding in emotions can weaken your body's immune system, making you more likely to get colds and other infections, as well as lead to the abuse of alcohol, tobacco or other drugs. The danger, experts agree, is that when we delay acknowledging our emotions, this can lead our body to speak louder and louder to get our attention. The following are some of the more common physical ailments and illnesses and that have been linked to holding in emotions:

• Headaches
• Stomachaches/ulcers
• Constipation or diarrhea
• Low back pain
• Neck pain
• Fatigue
• Depression
• Insomnia
• High blood pressure
• Anxiety
• Weight gain or loss
• Sexual problems
• General aches and pains
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Fibromyalgia
• Asthma
• Cancers

Healing Through Feeling Emotions

When we don't allow ourselves to feel our emotions, and instead run away from them or use other processes, such as drugs, to get a "high," we create a dangerous situation for our mental, emotional and physical health.

Healing can occur when we allow ourselves to feel, express and release emotions from the past that we have suppressed. The following are some helpful tips to help you address, express and improve your emotional health.

Tips to Improve Your Emotional Health

• Cry. The next time you feel moved to tears, stop and let yourself experience it.
• Laugh. The next time you feel moved to laughter, allow yourself to laugh.
• Speak. If you feel angry or upset with someone, speak with them about it. Sometimes just saying, "I feel angry," feeling it in your body, and then explaining why you are angry, can be the key to cleansing out the anger.
• Make sounds. You can do this in your car, in your home, or in your office. Take a deep breath, and as you are exhaling, allow whatever sounds you feel to come out. Repeat this up to ten times. Sound has a powerful ability to release emotional energy. Try a longer session, combined with stretching exercises, to release some of the longer held, stagnated emotions.
• Pay attention to physical clues. This could include an uneasy feeling in your stomach, a tightening of your chest or throat, or a clenching of your jaw. Your body might be hinting at emotions that you are trying to stuff. Pay attention to what the emotions might be, acknowledge them and breathe deeply. Tuning in to how you feel in your body can be the key to your healing.
• Practice Yoga. Yoga is probably one of the best activities you can do to tune into your body, mind and emotions. It is a holistic health practice. The postures will allow you to feel where you may be storing suppressed emotion, and the deep breathing will allow you to move the energy and express it in a healthy way.
• Get a Massage. Massage is another powerful way to tune into where you may be storing emotion in your body. By breathing deeply while the massage therapist works on different parts of your body, you can safely and effectively release long-held emotion.
• Talk to someone you trust. By confiding in a trusted friend or a trained therapist, you can explore your feelings more deeply and improve your self-understanding and self-acceptance, which is a key to good health.

When we acknowledge and allow ourselves to express our emotions in a healthy way, our self-understanding and acceptance improves, our body and mind feel cleansed, and we feel freer, happier, and most definitely, healthier.

Note: Although you may not be used to talking to your doctor about your feelings or problems in your personal life, it's important to be honest with your doctor about your emotions. Your doctor can suggest ways to treat your physical symptoms while you work together (or with a recommended therapist) to improve your emotional health.

Sources

American Academy of Family Physicians. Can you arrive, in your life experience, at a place where you feel Ecstasy? Joy and ecstasy, top of the charts for feelings. How do you attain that over the top JOY experience? Is it even possible today with the world condition? Let us explore ways to attain Joy and Ecstasy. Ways to bring Love and feelings that are “over the top” for you. Robert A. Johnson wrote ECSTASY and in his book he states, “It is a great tragedy of contemporary Western society that we have virtually lost the ability to experience the transformative power of ecstasy and joy.” Is he right?

What is Joy? Is it just a feeling or a state of being? Everyone has a different interpretation of their joy. Joy for one could be a small feeling and for another a bursting out of themselves. Or maybe Joy can run the gamet of small to bursting for any of us.

How do we know if we are feeling joy? Personal and individual...IF LIFE GIVE YOU LEMONS MAKE LEMONADE. When life gives us a lot of lemons...joy may be a day without the lemonade it brings. Or joy may be an absence of trouble. That kind of day may feels joyous. If we begin to notice our feeling and pay attention to those small joy feeling the theory is they will grow, expand and become more frequent. Easily said. Sometimes not so easily done. When the lemons are coming at us thick and fast it is hard to notice any joy. We are too busy dealing with dodging the lemons or making our life lemonade to notice positive. Life has ups and downs to say the least. Our choices definitely have and effect on what happens. The problem with that is hindsight is 20/20. While we are going through the process sometimes we choose the best we know how at the time. Learn from past mistakes may be the positive when we make bad choices for ourselves.

Do you wait for falling in love to feel JOY? Do we wait for someone else to bring us joy...no one can MAKE you feel. Only you can allow your feelings. I know, others can know you and push the right or wrong buttons. We choose to feel and we choose the people pushing the wrong buttons. Honoring ourselves and our own needs is sometimes difficult. We are usually taught to be unselfish. What the heck....who takes care of self then. I believe we need to BE selfish and take care of every aspect of ourselves. That way WE will be there to take care of the ones we care about.

We are here NOW. WE are to this point, this moment, right now is what we may have longed for. We can notice the joy, maybe it is tiny. In this moment is the reality. NOT past, it is done, not future- it is unknown and will evolve from this moment. NOW is where we notice ourselves, our feelings.

So, when we do feel real joy, joy we can definitely identify as real joy...why do we sometimes cry. Is our body so unused to feeling joy it is painful for our soul. Is it so foreign to our body it create a fear in us and we cry. I don’t have that answer. For me joy can be elusive and I may have days, or weeks that I do not notice any joy. Sometimes life gives us so many lemons we are buried in them. I try, and suggest for others, to look at the small joys at that time. The wonderful hue of yellow this lemon possesses. The fresh smell lemons bring with them. I know, silly, but what I mean is to notice, lets say the way this one cloud glows and appreciate and enjoy. Warm water of our shower, new leaves or autumn leaves or stillness or favorite music, that sort of things and be in this moment the now, aware of that tiny piece of joy. Let it sooth the other parts that are not so joyous.

Meditation may help learning to notice. Being quiet and within ourselves. A good story to guide my thoughts helps me. Guided imagery that can take you away from the lemonade or increase your calm and ability to notice your joy. Letting go of the chaos of the world for a time and go within, quietly and peacefully, with a scene or story you choose.

One of my friends on Facebook, Gilles posted this. When you finally allow yourself to trust joy and embrace it, you will find you dance with everything. So Open your arms and welcome the joy of today. True happiness arises in the first place from this enjoyment. Life is to live and to live means to be aware - joyously, drunkenly, serenely, divinely aware. Everyone is responsible for their own joy. Again back to, no one can make you feel.

Sometimes it is the quiet times that feel the best. Acceptance by another human even ourself. Acceptance of being the real us. No need for walls and masks. Just quietly me.

Here is an invitation from Oriah Mountain Dreamer. I love this one, Hope you Enjoy too.

THE INVITATION

It doesn't interest me what you do for a living.
I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing.
It doesn't interest me how old you are.
I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive.
It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life's betrayals or have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain. I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it or fade it or fix it.
I want to know if you can be with JOY, mine or your own, if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, to be realistic, to remember the limitations of being human.
It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disppoint another to be true to yourself, if you can bear the accusations of betrayal and not betray your own soul. If you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy.
I want to know if you can see beauty, even when it's not pretty, every day, and if you can source your own life from its presence.
It doesn't interest me to know where you live or how much money hou have. I want to know if you can get up, after the night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done to feed the children.
It doesn't interest me who you know or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.
It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you, from the inside, when all else falls away.
I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company that you keep in the empty moments.

Be yourself. The inner beauty shines much brighter than any outer shell we could imagine. FEEL GOOD inside. Be real. Open yourself emotionally. Love and care for yourself. You will shine and others will be attracted to the glow of feeling good. You are loved.

Staying in FEELS GOOD sometimes

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 130px; height: 97px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_v3Xsg7V2ATU/SyTG2l-aOUI/AAAAAAAAAFo/HpNynvsJVAs/s320/16568_195107893773_778243773_2918817_5546629_s.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5414671293215291714" />
Sometimes it just FEELS GOOD to stay home by the fire and read....especially when there is not a choice. from Mexico to Panama . It is quite common in its zone, but it not easy to find because of its transparent wings, which is a natural camouflage mechanism.
A butterfly with transparent wings is rare and beautiful. As delicate as finely blown glass, the presence of this rare tropical gem is used by rain forest ecologists as an indication of high habitat quality and its demise alerts them of ecological change. Rivaling the refined beauty of a stained glass window, the translucent wings of the Glasswing butterfly shimmer in the sunlight like polished panes of turquoise, orange, green, and red. All things beautiful do not have to be full of color to be noticed: in life that which is unnoticed has the most power.

TASTY TEA EXPERIENCE

Feeling Good can involve a nice cup or glass of beverage. Something you can soak into or float away with. Warm and wonderful or cool and refreshing. Today is a cool day here near COOL, CA. Nice break from hot California August weather. Tea. Yes I think tea would be nice. Not just any tea perhaps, but a nice fragrant tea. Tea Forte come in little tepee silk bags with a tiny leaf happily waving from the apex. If you have the Tea Forte cups you will have a lid with a little hole for the waving leaf. While the tea brews the leaf does little circle dances around the hole. Feels good just to watch. I kept the tea bags for a while-just toooo cute to throw away. I never discovered how to reuse them or what to do with them so we had a sad departure. Enough writing I am off for a little leaf dancing. You can get tea forte at feelgoodplace4u.com ENJOY

Corny Cob Eating Survey

Hi all, Up for a corny survey just for fun.....?? My sweetie is digging the dirt out from under our house making a cool wine room “cave.” He takes the dirt down our hill to a ditch. He voiced a wish to have a wheelbarrow with brakes.

Being that his birthday is soon, I thought it would be wonderful to grant him this wish. SO, I Googled “wheelbarrow with brakes” and at long last found one, ordered it, and waited. It arrived and did not have a brake. What it had was a wheel stop. We didn’t want to stop, just to slow down. SO, back it went and the search continued.

While sipping our coffee Saturday morning we searched again. COOL TOOLS had a video of just the wheelbarrow we wanted. When we linked to the website they suggested, we were rudely told “this item is no longer available.”

Being stubborn, Taurus you see, I continued. I kept looking at links until I found one for the “Jeep Wheelbarrow.” It was the one we wanted. This website had a phone number. When I called a miracle happened. A REAL person answered the phone. He was the developer of the Jeep Wheelbarrow with disk brakes. That was the good news. The bad news was he told me there are none available-through him. He had sold all to Freidmans because the wheelbarrows were hard to market, given the construction people thought the brakes were a “wimpy” thing.

He, however, supplied us with the phone number to Freidmans, which was 2 ½ hours away in Santa Rosa. I was told they had 14 left and when they were gone that was IT…..no more wheelbarrow with brakes.

My sweetie looked at me and I looked at my sweetie and we said…lets go. I napped and he drove and we are now the proud owners of a sleek black Jeep wheelbarrow with yellow handles and a wonderful disk brake. It works like a charm and we are so pleased.

Freidmans has 125 left they tell me. Some in Santa Rosa, some in Sonoma, and some in Ukiah. If you want one before they are extent, call Freidmans 707-584-7811 in Santa Rosa,CA and ask for Debra Marshall. Tell her “Yvonne Sinclair referred you to her about the wheelbarrow with brakes” and she will know exactly what you want. They are selling for about ½ the wholesale price at this time. Just another FEEL GOOD story.

FEELS GOOD when JOY lands right in your hand!

My sister, Yvette, sends me lots of great stuff.

Be real. Show yourself. You will be loved.

I like to feel so good tears come to my eyes when I belly laugh.
